More Fears Surrounding Water Contamination

Posted by Rayne Water

The Flint lead water contamination crisis has topped national headlines, and now a small town in upstate New York, is afraid that they are next in line for an epic water contamination crisis. According to the NY Times, residents have called 911 asking whether the water would burn their skin off, families have lined up to have their blood drawn and their water wells tested, banks have suspended any new mortgages and even Erin Brockovich has been to town. Not good news by any means! This time the offender is an, as yet unregulated, contaminate called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a toxic chemical which is a byproduct of Teflon manufacturing.
PFOA has been linked to an increased risk for thyroid disease, cancer and some serious complications in pregnant women. Like Flint, it was discovered in the water supply more than a year and a half ago, however it wasn’t until just recently that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a warning to residents. State and local officials continued to assure the public on several occasions that their drinking water was safe, even after the EPA recommended discontinuing use of the area’s water wells. Needless to say, residents are scared, angry and looking for solutions to make their water safe again.
The state of New York has pledged $10 million to install new water filtration systems in the village and as of a month ago, officials announced that a temporary filtration system had been installed and that the village’s water mains were in the process of being flushed. However, many residents feel that the damage has already been done – tales of mysterious illnesses, strange smelling tap water and orange goo in the river are common themes in the area.
Here in America, we are privileged to have some of the cleanest and safest water in the world, the problem with this is that many Americans become complacent about water safety. Too often, residents just take it for granted that their water is safe and never even have it tested. Situations like those in Flint, and now in New York, will hopefully lead to more vigilance in water testing and installation of home water filtration systems. Many drinking water filtration systems are able to filter out lead and other harmful contaminates like PFOA before they have the opportunity to do any lasting damage.
The scariest part of these water contamination issues is that they went unnoticed or unaddressed for way too long. Homeowners need to take action and make sure that the water they are drinking and serving their families is safe and contaminate free. Installing a point of use drinking water system will ensure they are only drinking the safest water possible. Even if an unknown or unregulated contaminate finds its way into their water supply, they will still be protected. Here at Rayne of North County, we can help test your water and find the right water filtration system to fit both your budget and your water filtration needs, visit our website at www.raynewater.com/find-location/ to see how we can help.
