Do Counter Top Water Filters Work?

Posted by Ken Christopher

We are fortunate to live in a country where we have somewhat unlimited access to clean, healthy, drinking water.  That being said however, there are still impurities in our water supply system that can be harmful for human consumption. From heavy metals to bacteria to pharmaceuticals, many of these contaminates find their way into our drinking water which is why we need to be vigilant in making sure we are filtering out these contaminants to protect us and our families. There are numerous different water filtration systems  on the market today, ranging from a pitcher in the fridge to high end drinking water systems; does it really make a difference which one you buy? The short answer is YES, it definitely makes a difference! It would be wonderful if we could just all go out and purchase an inexpensive counter top water filter or install a simple water faucet filter, but unfortunately they have limits on what they can do. The biggest concern with a basic single stage water filtration system is that they give a false sense of security; homeowners think they are protecting their family from water contaminates  when in fact they aren’t really filtering out much at all. Due to the fact that most of these types of water filters rely on carbon filtration only, they are ineffective in filtering out a whole host of contaminates. Carbon filtration will filter out chlorine and some other minor contaminates, but they leave behind some pretty major ones.    Counter top water filters, water faucet filters and your basic filtration pitcher are not able to filter out many dangerous contaminates; arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, radium, asbestos, bacteria, human viruses, chromium, microbes, perchlorate and uranium can all penetrate past these simple water filters and can cause some serious illnesses and even death. They are also ineffective in filtering out inorganic minerals and pharmaceuticals which more and more are making their way into our water supply every day. For truly effective water filtration, homeowners must look to reverse osmosis filtration  or ion-exchange water filtration. Both types have the ability to filter out over 99 percent of these harmful contaminates, leaving you with the cleanest, safest drinking water available. While both are equally effective, choice tends to come down to preference and efficiency. RO systems provide superior tasting water, but with a significant amount of water waste. LINX Drinking Water Systems provide equally superior water, but with the ability to customize taste and without the water waste seen in RO systems. Whichever way a homeowner decides to go, they will be assured that their water is safe to drink.

E. coli in American Drinking Water

Posted by Ken Christopher

E. coli is nothing to mess with, that’s why when bottled water is recalled to due E. coli contamination, most people pay attention. Hopefully, enough people are aware though. It’s not the first time this has happened and unfortunately, it probably won’t be the last. Drinking water that doesn’t run through a water filter first is getting quite the bad rap lately. Last year, an article from CNN discussed how Niagara Bottling LLC was removing some of its products. In fact, 14 brands of bottled water were recalled due to possible E. coli. Now, there is another article that shows how some of our home septic systems could also be adding E. coli to our drinking water.

In the first situation, the company claimed that the recall was not really due to water contamination but due to caution. There apparently were no signs of its product being contaminated or reports of consumers falling sick, it said. Either way, something sparked the recall and consumers deserved to know how to protect themselves from contaminants – especially with bottled water! The recall began when the plant was notified by the Department of Environmental Control and the Department of Agriculture of the positive test result for E. coli.

This “voluntary” recall affected water bottled from June 10 through 18 in two Pennsylvania plants only. The company’s spokesperson said those two facilities represent less than 3% of Niagara’s overall volume. Right after, there were several negative samples which led the company to believe that it was just the one bad lab result. Their claim was that water goes through a strenuous disinfection process, which “is working perfectly, because it’s killing every bacteria.” This may be such, but the circumstances showed that positive results CAN and WILL happen at some point. Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses.

Septic systems are not functioning like they need to be and Michigan State University researchers have sampled 64 river systems in the state for E. coli and the human fecal bacteria B-theta and found just that – freshwater contamination is stemming from septic systems. We now need more evaluation of water quality and health implications and the impact of septic systems on watersheds.

Too many consumers rely on bottled water because they believe it is “safer” than tap water, but this is just not true. This article stands to debunk the myth that bottled water is safer than the water from your tap. It is also way more expensive and much less eco-friendly. Skip the bottled water and consider a home drinking water system. Your tap water can benefit from a water filter  and you’ll enjoy safe drinking water without the worry of drinking water contamination, failed sample tests or adding to toxic waste in landfills. Bottled water has so many disadvantages – give your tap water the ultimate advantage with one of our drinking water systems.

Contact our water treatment technicians today and see what home water filter would be best for your household and your family. Whether your threat is from bottled water or your home’s septic system, you’ll be safer than ever.

More Fears Surrounding Water Contamination

Posted by Ken Christopher

The Flint lead water contamination crisis has topped national headlines, and now a small town in upstate New York, is afraid that they are next in line for an epic water contamination crisis. According to the NY Times, residents have called 911 asking whether the water would burn their skin off, families have lined up to have their blood drawn and their water wells tested, banks have suspended any new mortgages and even Erin Brockovich has been to town. Not good news by any means! This time the offender is an, as yet unregulated, contaminate called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a toxic chemical which is a byproduct of Teflon manufacturing. PFOA has been linked to an increased risk for thyroid disease, cancer and some serious complications in pregnant women. Like Flint, it was discovered in the water supply more than a year and a half ago, however it wasn’t until just recently that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a warning to residents. State and local officials continued to assure the public on several occasions that their drinking water  was safe, even after the EPA recommended discontinuing use of the area’s water wells. Needless to say, residents are scared, angry and looking for solutions to make their water safe again. The state of New York has pledged $10 million to install new water filtration systems  in the village and as of a month ago, officials announced that a temporary filtration system had been installed and that the village’s water mains were in the process of being flushed. However, many residents feel that the damage has already been done – tales of mysterious illnesses, strange smelling tap water and orange goo in the river are common themes in the area. Here in America, we are privileged to have some of the cleanest and safest water in the world, the problem with this is that many Americans become complacent about water safety. Too often, residents just take it for granted that their water is safe and never even have it tested. Situations like those in Flint, and now in New York, will hopefully lead to more vigilance in water testing  and installation of home water filtration systems. Many drinking water filtration systems are able to filter out lead and other harmful contaminates like PFOA before they have the opportunity to do any lasting damage. The scariest part of these water contamination issues is that they went unnoticed or unaddressed for way too long. Homeowners need to take action and make sure that the water they are drinking and serving their families is safe and contaminate free. Installing a point of use drinking water system w ill ensure they are only drinking the safest water possible. Even if an unknown or unregulated contaminate finds its way into their water supply, they will still be protected. Here at Rayne of North County, we can help test your water and find the right water filtration system to fit both your budget and your water filtration needs, visit our website at www.raynewater.com/find-location/ to see how we can help.

Water Filtration: Affordable Options for Everyone

Posted by Ken Christopher

Considering today’s water contamination issues, it makes sense to install a water filtration system  We see stories almost every day of water quality concerns; from environmental concerns to poor infrastructure systems, our water supply is constantly at risk. With that thought in mind, we want to make water filtration systems available to everyone, not just a select few. This is one of the reasons why we offer different purchasing options and special offers for both businesses and homeowners. Our most popular option is to purchase a system outright. Owning either a drinking water system  or a water softener is a great way to not only have the best water available, but it also adds value to your home. When or if you ever put your home on the market, potential buyers see these types of systems as a good selling feature. While purchasing a water filtration system is a larger up-front cost, over time it will pay for itself. In fact, it is estimated that a water softener saves an average of $100 per month and for an average family of four a drinking water system will pay for itself in less than five years. While purchasing a water filtration system makes sense in many cases, sometimes leasing a system is a better option. For one thing, there isn’t that large initial outlay of cash, and monthly payments are much more manageable for many individuals. Leasing is also a great option for those who live in rental properties; when they plan to move out, all they have to do is cancel their lease agreement and they are good to go. Another great benefit of leasing is that you aren’t responsible for any maintenance or repairs on the system which are typically covered under your rental agreement. Here at Rayne of Irvine, we want everyone to be able to enjoy good quality water at an affordable and easy to manage price. We are here to answer any questions you have about water quality and water filtration, as well as help you find the perfect system for your home and your budget. You can check out our website https://www.raynewater.com/irvine/  for our current specials – we have specials for both purchasing as well as leasing so either way you can’t go wrong!

Water Quality in Lompoc

Posted by Ken Christopher

Water quality varies from place to place, and is mostly dependent on environmental and ecological factors. Obviously, water coming from a remote location in the mountains up in Alaska is not going to contain the same contaminates as the water supply in New York City. A water’s hardness will depend on the mineral deposits that ground water percolates through before it reaches the water supply distribution centers. The area around a watershed will determine its water quality as well; if it is surrounded by farmland, the nitrate levels will most likely be much higher or if there are industrial plants in the area, you have to look for other types of contamination. The water in Lompoc has reports of high levels of arsenic, selenium and nitrates and is also classified as being hard. According to Sperling’s Best Places, the water quality in Lompoc only rated a 43 on a scale of 1-100, the average US water rated a 55. So what does that mean for residents? Well it simply means that there are a few water quality issues that residents need to consider treatment for. When it comes to contaminates such as arsenic, nitrates and selenium, you need to be really careful to make sure they are filtered out of drinking water before consumption. All three can cause some serious illnesses and nitrates in particular can be especially harmful to young children. The best water filtration for these types of contaminates is a drinking water system such as our LINX Drinking Water System or a Reverse Osmosis System. Both of these have the capability to effectively filter out these contaminates and the LINX Drinking Water System can even reduce nitrates down to a non-detect level. As far as the hard water is concerned, this is a very common problem in our area. In Santa Barbara, for example, the water measures in at about 25 grains per gallon; the water hardness scale runs from zero grains (very soft water) to 10.5 grains (very hard water). So the 25 grains per gallon is two and a half times off the scale! Fortunately, hard water has a very easy solution – installing a water softener.  Hard water might be very common, however it is not to be ignored. The biggest issue with hard water is that it is exceptionally hard on plumbing and plumbing fixtures. Untreated hard water will not only dramatically shorten the lifespan of plumbing fixtures and other water utilizing appliances and utilities, but it will also drastically lower their efficiency as well. This translates into high maintenance costs as well as higher utility bills. The good news, is that even though water quality in Lompoc might not be as pure as we would like, it is very treatable. Here at Rayne of Santa Barbara we are experts in treating the water quality issues in our area, so give us a call or stop on in and we will help you determine the best options in water treatment for your unique water needs.

Athletes Need Drinking Water – Lots of It!

Posted by Ken Christopher

Athletes come in all sizes and shapes, all ages and levels. But one thing always rings true – an athlete needs plenty of high-quality drinking water to support their health and their performance. The importance of hydration is often forgotten, but we need to make sure that athletes are drinking enough to avoid dehydration. Whether your 5-year old is playing soccer one night or you are going for a 5-mile run early in the morning, be ready to drink water. Not really sure why? Keep on reading… Water is essential to our health. Anyone performing fitness activities, big or small, can be considered an athlete. Water regulates your body temperature and lubricates your joints. It also helps transport nutrients to give you energy and keep you healthy. If you’re not properly hydrated, your body can’t perform at its highest level. You may experience fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, or more serious symptoms. This is true for anyone, even those who are not athletes. But athletes need more water to replace the fluids they lose through perspiration. Likewise, athletes who are dehydrated show a considerable decrease in performance.  They simply lack the energy and focus to perform well when dehydrated. According to Breaking Muscle, A reduction of just 2% of fluid can result in degraded performance by as much as 10-20%. This is a significant amount when you think about the life of an athlete. Consider for a moment the amount of effort that goes into training to improve by just 5%! The best defense for dehydration is to be proactive.  Never wait until thirst strikes to consume water.  At that point it is likely too late. Another problem is that too many athletes rely on bottled water rather than filtered drinking water. Bottled water isn’t always safe and bottled water waste is becoming a crisis worldwide, so we encourage you to refill your own water bottles to stay hydrated, while still considering the environment. Some tap water contains contaminants and some water fountains are also found to have high levels of lead which is why filtered drinking water is a much better option. Your best bet is a home water filter that comes with advanced technology for a low price. The athletes in your family need to stay hydrated in order to perform better and stay healthy – just make sure they’re doing it with the best water available to them. Contact us today to learn more about our home drinking water systems and how they can support any athlete in your family, recreational or professional alike.

Superior Nitrate Removal Starts with LINX®

Posted by Ken Christopher

drinking water for granted. We are grateful to have access to water sources these days, but we often forget that our drinking water can contain impurities like nitrates which can pose health risks when the quantities are great enough. Just because you want to ensure the quality and purity of your drinking water for your family does not mean that you’re taking it for granted. It is important to educate yourself and advocate for safe, healthy drinking water. That is why we are so proud to be able to offer a selection of drinking water systems that lead the way when it comes to nitrate removal. Nitrates in drinking water are dangerous when the levels exceed the standards set forth by the government and the state. Here in California, human activities such as fertilizer use and manure applications, have increased nitrate concentrations in drinking water to levels above EPA’s drinking water standard. Nitrates cause so much concern because it is considered an acute contaminant, meaning that just one exposure can affect a person’s health. Too much nitrate in your body makes it harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen. While most people recover quickly, this can be very dangerous for infants and some adults. Infants exposed to high amounts of nitrate may develop “blue baby syndrome.” All of these are important factors to consider when choosing your means of nitrate removal. Municipal drinking water treatment facilities test for nitrates, but wells are left on their own and you’ll need to test your own water for nitrate contamination frequently. The maximum contaminant level, or EPA’s drinking water standard, for nitrate is 10 milligrams per liter mg/L, which is the same thing as 10 parts per million ppm. If a nitrate test shows levels higher than 10 ppm, you should find a safe alternative drinking water supply. The best thing to do is to install a water filtration system that will effectively remove nitrate from your water. Many people rely on reverse osmosis (RO)  to remove these contaminants from their drinking water but in areas where the levels are quite high, even traditional reverse osmosis can leave levels above what has been labeled as safe. Our drinking water systems have an edge above the others on the market because of our LINX® technology and how much nitrate contamination they can handle. The LINX 140 is the first water filtration system certified to reduce nitrate and nitrite contamination to NON-DETECT levels in certification testing. These reduction levels are far superior to traditional reverse osmosis filtration systems and, in addition, the LINX technology also uses significantly less water – up to 90% less than a reverse osmosis system. Being concerned about your drinking water doesn’t mean you take it for granted. In fact, it means you care about your drinking water and want to make sure it is the best you can make it for your family to keep them healthy and safe, always.

How often should I test my Well Water?

Posted by Ken Christopher

The quality of ground water can quickly and easily change over time; even though it may smell, taste and look the same, it is highly susceptible to contamination. It is important to regularly check for changes, or contaminants in order to maintain healthy, safe drinking water. Due to its tendency for contamination, it is recommended that private wells be tested at least once a year.

Regular water testing can help you track changes over time, identify any current water problems, and make sure your drinking water is safe for consumption. Because we understand how important it is to have your drinking water tested at regular intervals, here at Rayne of Ventura, we offer free water tests. We want to make sure that you and your family are protected against water contamination, which can often go unnoticed.

The only way to know for certain if your drinking water is clean, is to have it tested by a professional. As we mentioned before, many contaminates are completely undetectable by taste, smell or appearance. A reputable water company will check for bacteria, nitrates, ions and several other dangerous substances that could unknowingly be lurking in your water supply.

Some common contaminates to test for on a regular basis are:

When it comes time to add a water filtration system in your home or office, you will want to look for a water company with an outstanding level of customer service, and performance. Here at Rayne of Ventura, we can help you choose the perfect water treatment system to match your unique water needs. We always test your water first, to determine what type of filtration or water treatment is needed, and will then recommend the correct product to alleviate any water concerns or contamination issues you may be faced with.

Remember, private wells need to be tested at a minimum of once a year, however shallow wells and surface water need to be tested more often because they can become contaminated easier. Keep in mind that many water contaminants can cause health problems that may take years to develop. You don’t want to wait too long to have your water tested, or install a water filtration system, because you could be putting you and your family in unnecessary danger.

PFAS Water Contamination is Worse in California

Posted by Ken Christopher

A new study published in the journal, Environmental Sciences and Technology Letters, discovered that 16.5 million Americans are drinking water that is contaminated with at least one of six types of PFAS’s, with levels at, or above, the maximum limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While PFAS’s can be found in drinking water anywhere in the United States, the majority of the toxic water is found in just 13 states and California tops that list. PFAS’s are polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances used to make such things as food packaging items like popcorn bags and pizza boxes, nonstick cookware, fire suppressing foam and certain fabrics. The biggest problem with PFAS’s is that once they are introduced into the body, they will remain there for a long, long time – about 3 ½ years to be exact. This means that each time they are ingested, they will accumulate, which can cause some serious health problems. These chemicals are stored in the liver, blood serum and other organs, and have been linked to high cholesterol, hormone suppression, obesity and cancer. Another study in the Environmental Health Perspectives found that PFAS’s may even be disrupting the immune system of children; those exposed to PFAS’s, from drinking water, at a young age, had lower levels of tetanus and diphtheria antibodies than expected, after being immunized to them. Some other health care professionals have seen this same effect for influenza and measles as well. While there have already been restrictions placed on PFAS’s predecessor, perfluorooctanoic acid, there are still not enough restrictions in place for PFAS’s. With this being said, it is important to have your drinking water tested for these chemicals, especially if you live in a location known to have higher concentrations of PFAS’s, such as California. Rural areas are not the only places that need water filtration, water softeners in the San Fernando Valley and other major Southern California metropolitan areas are becoming increasingly popular due to hard water problems.

Other locations that are plagued with high levels of these toxic chemicals are those with watersheds located near military bases, wastewater treatment plants and industrial sites. The Water Research Foundation conducted a series of tests to determine what water filtration methods were the most effective at removing PFAS’s. Their determination was that nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis (RO) were the most effective in removing even the smallest of these toxic chemicals. An effective RO system such as our RayneClear Reverse Osmosis System or RaynePure Plus Reverse Osmosis System has the ability to filter out some of the most toxic chemicals out there, including PFAS’s.

Rayne Water is happy to serve both Northern and Southern California. From water softening systems in Sacramento to reverse osmosis in San Diego , we have you covered! If you would like more information on any of our available drinking water filtration systems, and what types of contaminates they will filter out, give us a call at 1-800-327-9777 and we will be glad to go over all of your water filtration options with you.
