Feeling Helpless Against Copper Pipe Leakage?

Posted by Ken Christopher

Municipal water facilities use a variety of processes in order to make our drinking water safe for consumption. Many water districts, specifically in Orange County, are now using chloramines to treat their water supply. Chloramines  are comprised of a mixture of chlorine and ammonia that work together to extend the disinfecting power of chlorine. They ensure that the water supply is free of bacteria, viruses and other disease causing pathogens. While chloramines are highly effective in this regard, the downside of this disinfection process is their harmful effect on copper piping. Since the switch was made to chloramine disinfectant, there have been thousands of reports of pinhole leaks in copper pipes. California is one of several states which restricts the use of plastic piping, while promoting the use of copper piping  in their plumbing systems. According to the California Professional Association of Specialty Contractors (CalPASC) there is currently an epidemic of copper pipe leaks in the state and it is being attributed to this shift to the use of chloramine. Needless to say, homeowners are greatly distressed by the added expense to replace damaged pipes. There is a solution to the problem however; the Rayne Chloramine Buster. The Rayne Chloramine Buster 1500  and the Rayne Chloramine Buster 2000 were specifically designed to considerably reduce the damaging effects of chloramines and other compounds such as hydrogen sulfide before they enter into the home’s plumping system. Installed at the home’s water main, they remove chloramine and other noxious sulfides before they have the opportunity to enter the plumbing system and cause damage. Both the Rayne Chloramine Buster 1500 and Rayne Chloramine Buster 2000 are equipped with a custom media application produced from high quality coconut shell carbons. This media modification allows for superior water treatment  capabilities right at the source. They are able to remove much larger quantities of not only chloramine, but other organic species which may also be present in the water. Homeowners no longer have to feel helpless against copper pipe failure, by just installing a chloramine buster they not only have peace of mind that their pipes are not going to develop leaks, but also know they are potentially saving thousands of dollars in water and pipe damage.

Hard Water during the Holidays

Posted by Ken Christopher

The holidays are the perfect time to remind us of everything we wish we could change about our home. Between decorating and hosting holiday parties, we want to impress our guests and make sure everything goes smoothly. But the holidays can be tough when you have hard water to deal with. Homes without a residential water softener will spend too much time dealing with mineral buildup and too little time socializing and entertaining our guests. This holiday season, the best thing you can do is install one of our home water softeners before your guests arrive. Anyone living with hard water knows that it isn’t unsafe, it is just a hassle. Calcium and magnesium deposits leave stains on silverware and glassware, clog pipes and water appliances and make hair, skin and clothing dull and lifeless. None of these issues are ideal for holiday entertaining. No one wants guests drinking from glassware that has white limescale buildup and looks dirty nor should they have to deal with a film on their skin after using your shower. Entertaining guests with hard water can be embarrassing for sure.  After hosting guests, you may also have to spend additional time in the kitchen scrubbing your dishes and glasses to remove the buildup or dealing with water appliances that are clogged from the mineral buildup. There is no ideal situation and the best option is a water softener. Our residential water softeners come in a variety of sizes and models so that you can get exactly what your household demands. We have models that work for smaller apartments and others that can handle the demands of larger homes and entertaining guests during the holidays. No one wants to live with hard water, but this time of year is the perfect time to invest in something that will make your holidays more enjoyable and smooth. Our water softeners have the ability to monitor regeneration needs, household demands, peak flow and so much more. A residential water softener can eliminate hard water buildup, give life back to your hair and skin, keep colors brighter in your clothing and extend the life of your pipes and water-using appliances. Smart and efficient, make this holiday your best holiday yet by investing in one of our residential water softeners. Entertaining just got a whole lot easier!

Water Conservation: Now We’re Cooking!

Posted by Ken Christopher

Learning how to conserve water has become a lifestyle change. Let’s look at it in terms of a diet; a diet is a temporary set period of time where we deprive ourselves of something, a lifestyle change is a permanent new way of thinking and becomes a natural part of our everyday routine. Water conservation is a lifestyle change that Californians must embrace if we are going to survive and prosper during this ongoing water crisis. Today we are going to look at new concepts of water conservation in the kitchen – habits we can all incorporate into our daily routine.

One of the first things to consider is the food we are consuming. All food production incorporates water to produce, but some takes more than others. Beef production, for example, is one of the largest water consumers  out there; it takes almost six times more water to produce one gram of beef protein than it does a gram of protein from other plant-based sources such as lentils or beans. There are even some restaurants in California that have limited beef on their menu now and some have even taken to not serving beef on certain days of the week, in an effort to conserve water.

Another change we are seeing in our kitchens is the way food is being prepared. Cooks are steaming more and boiling less, using cold water instead of hot to fill pots, recycling used water for plants and landscaping, defrosting food in the fridge instead of in water and even scraping food off plates instead of pre-rinsing them. One restaurant chef in Big Sur gained notoriety by actually rigging up an air compressor to blow food off plates before putting them in the dishwasher. Obviously this isn’t something a home cook would do, but the ingenuity speaks to a greater commitment of water conservation.

The type and quality of food we are seeing is changing as well; if you’ve noticed in the grocery store lately, many fruits and vegetables are noticeably smaller than they were before the drought. They also tend to ripen at a much faster rate and if not eaten quickly, can be wasted. The upside of this is that their flavor is much more concentrated. When fruit doesn’t receive an abundance of water during the growing process, their cells won’t retain water, which means that they will be smaller, but more intensely flavored. Dry-farmed fruits and vegetables is actually a preferred method for some growers to gain better flavor. So when you see those smaller fruits and vegetables in the produce section, don’t pass them up – they are most likely delicious.

We realize that water conservation in our kitchens is probably a drop in the bucket in the overall scheme of things, however it does make a difference. Choosing the right water filter is another great way to conserve water; check out our LINX high-efficiency drinking water system It is just one more way to help residents gain some control over a situation that they have no control over. This is going to be a long-term issue for Californians, so committing to a water conserving lifestyle now will definitely make a difference in the long run.

Water Filtration: Affordable Options for Everyone

Posted by Ken Christopher

Considering today’s water contamination issues, it makes sense to install a water filtration system  We see stories almost every day of water quality concerns; from environmental concerns to poor infrastructure systems, our water supply is constantly at risk. With that thought in mind, we want to make water filtration systems available to everyone, not just a select few. This is one of the reasons why we offer different purchasing options and special offers for both businesses and homeowners. Our most popular option is to purchase a system outright. Owning either a drinking water system  or a water softener is a great way to not only have the best water available, but it also adds value to your home. When or if you ever put your home on the market, potential buyers see these types of systems as a good selling feature. While purchasing a water filtration system is a larger up-front cost, over time it will pay for itself. In fact, it is estimated that a water softener saves an average of $100 per month and for an average family of four a drinking water system will pay for itself in less than five years. While purchasing a water filtration system makes sense in many cases, sometimes leasing a system is a better option. For one thing, there isn’t that large initial outlay of cash, and monthly payments are much more manageable for many individuals. Leasing is also a great option for those who live in rental properties; when they plan to move out, all they have to do is cancel their lease agreement and they are good to go. Another great benefit of leasing is that you aren’t responsible for any maintenance or repairs on the system which are typically covered under your rental agreement. Here at Rayne of Irvine, we want everyone to be able to enjoy good quality water at an affordable and easy to manage price. We are here to answer any questions you have about water quality and water filtration, as well as help you find the perfect system for your home and your budget. You can check out our website https://www.raynewater.com/irvine/  for our current specials – we have specials for both purchasing as well as leasing so either way you can’t go wrong!

Ventura’s Hard Water Woes

Posted by Ken Christopher

Hard water  is one of the greatest, and most widespread, water quality concerns here in America. In fact, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) almost 90 percent of homes here in the US are plagued with hard water problems. Hard water is characterized as water with a high mineral content. It is created as ground water permeates through deposits of chalk and limestone, which are mostly comprised of magnesium carbonates and calcium. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon; very soft water contains zero grains per gallon, whereas very hard water measures 10.5 grains per gallon. Our water here in Ventura County, on the other hand, measures between 20 and 50 grains per gallon which translates into severe hard water conditions. So what does that mean for Ventura residents? Well, the short answer is that installing a water softener  is pretty much a necessity if you live here. The biggest issue with hard water is that it is exceptionally hard on plumbing and plumbing fixtures. Untreated hard water will not only dramatically shorten the lifespan of plumbing fixtures and other water utilizing appliances and utilities, but it will also drastically lower their efficiency as well. This translates into high maintenance costs as well as higher utility bills. Another area where the effects of hard water are felt is in on the skin and hair. Homeowners who bathe or shower with hard water, oftentimes notice that not only does their hair become brittle, dull and limp but their skin also dries out easily and is often itchy. Eczema sufferers are especially sensitive to hard water and notice an increase in breakouts and irritation if they bathe in hard water. Hard water will also reduce the effectiveness of soaps and detergents. If you have ever washed clothes with hard water, you will notice that they just don’t appear as white as they should. Over time, whites become grays and colors fade much faster than normal. Softened water on the other hand, allows soaps and detergents to do their job as intended and clothes will be noticeably whiter and brighter and will wear much longer. So the bottom line is that a water softener  isn’t necessary for every homeowner, but in homes with hard water, they are a definite necessity. The long term effects of hard water and the wear and tear it puts on – well everything – makes water softeners a must have for hard water. We offer water treatment systems in different locations. Is a Water Softener Really Necessary?

Posted by Ken Christopher

Water is one of the main utilities in our homes and it touches just about every activity we do in them. From drinking water to dishes, laundry and bathing, water is an integral part of the household. Due to this fact, if water quality is compromised, it makes a huge impact on all areas of the home. Untreated hard water can be especially tough on a home, and the only way to really alleviate it is with a water softener. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on just about every surface it touches. It also produces a buildup of scale in plumbing systems and in water utilizing appliances, such as hot water heaters and dishwashers. Scale buildup is one of the main culprits of early appliance failure and clogged plumbing lines, which can cost a minor fortune to repair. In addition, it drastically reduces efficiency of appliances, leading to higher utility bills. Another area where the effects of hard water are felt is in on the skin and hair. Homeowners who bathe or shower with hard water, oftentimes notice that their skin is excessively dry and itchy. In fact, many eczema suffers have much more severe outbreaks if they live in a house with hard water, and on the flip side they notice fewer and less sever outbreaks with softened water.  Hard water can also leave a residue on hair which makes it appear dull and limp. Since hard water reduces the effectiveness of soaps, there is a noticeable difference in clothes washed with hard water and those washed with softened water. Whites tend to gray much quicker and colors fade faster when washed in hard water. If a water softener is used to treat the water however, the laundry detergent can do its job as intended and clothes will appear cleaner, brighter and softer than before. So is a water softener  really necessary? Well, if your home has hard water, then we feel that it is absolutely necessary; the long term effects of hard water are just too many to ignore. Installing a water softener will not only alleviate all the negative effects of hard water, but will also provide some great benefits as well. Not only will your skin and hair be soft and shiny, but the utility and repair costs alone could almost pay for the water softener itself.

Supporting your local businesses means a lot to them – and your community – for many reasons. One of those reasons is because local businesses are experts on the local area. This local knowledge benefits both the business and the consumer. According to a recent article from Independent Business, some of the most important reasons to buy from a local business include local character and prosperity; community businesses deserve some economic advantages over those not in your community. Another reason is for community well-being. Local businesses help sustain town centers, link neighborhoods and neighbors and often contribute back to the local causes within the community. You’ll also be keeping dollars in the local economy and help your neighborhood businesses thrive with your patronage. As local business make money, they also tend to give back to the community which in turn benefits their residents. Local businesses also provide jobs and wages for community residents. So Many Water Filter Choices, How Will You Decide?

Posted by Ken Christopher

These days, there are plenty of drinking water systems on the market for you to choose from. But with so many options, and so many companies telling you that THEIR product is the best, how will you ever choose the right water filter for your household? How will you know what to look for in order to provide your family with high-quality drinking water? We are not here to just tell you we have the best drinking water systems on the market – we want to prove it to you.  Selecting a home water treatment system takes time and it takes some knowledge of what to look for in a product. In a recent article from NSF, they explain what makes a great, efficient drinking water system and how to narrow down your search. People have different reasons for choosing a water filter or other drinking water system. In order to capitalize on the health benefits of water, it is essential to draw from a clean source of water. Keeping in mind that there are more than 2100 known drinking water contaminants that may be present in tap water, including several known poisons, don’t you think it’s time that you pay more attention to your own drinking water? Finding the right filter will help you to improve the quality and purity of your tap water for your family. Start by finding out what is in your water. If you’re suspicious of drinking water contamination or you simply want to know what your neighborhood drinking water is like, your water quality report is the perfect place to read about it. If you have a private well, you’ll have to consider getting your drinking water independently tested to see what it contains. Then, you’ll have to decide what contaminants you want to reduce. Which ones are the most concerning to you? Which ones have the highest levels? Not all water filters can reduce all contaminants, so before you decide, you’ll want to know which contaminates that product can remove and which it cannot. It should be certified to address your individual concerns. Once you do this, you’ll then want to compare which water treatment systems are right for you. There are point-of-use systems, whole house filters, pitchers and many more. Our water technicians can also help answer any questions you might have and help you make a decision about what type of system would work best for you and your family – they are only a phone call away. Finally, NSF certified drinking water filters adhere to standards applicable to each type of treatment option. You may notice the NSF mark on a product and this is important. We know that not all water filters have this certification, but our drinking water systems do and can offer you numerous solutions to meet your household demands and water quality concerns. Our systems will reduce water waste, remove almost any contaminants, save you money, and finally, are certified and effective at improving the quality and purity of your drinking water. When the search for a home water filter becomes too daunting, make it easy on yourself and give us a call. All you need for water quality is right here.

Winter Watering: What You Need to Know

Posted by Ken Christopher

There are two very important things we want you to consider saving more of this winter; money and water. When it comes to winter watering and desert landscaping, there are a few tips you can try that will help you do a better job controlling your winter irrigation habits. According to the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association AMWUA, many businesses and homeowners are watering throughout the winter, as if it were still 110 degrees outside. We know that the other seasons, especially summer, require us to water our plants a little more and a little more often, but water conservation is still crucial to the well-being of the Southwest and Western United States. Like many other homeowners in our area, desert-adapted plants can make it through the winter months with little or no water. Overwatering is just a waste of water and money. Experts agree that even rye grass can thrive with a watering every week or two. There is no need to water each and every day during the winter months. Water efficiency and efficient and eco-friendly water treatment systems are at the heart of what we do, so we wanted to pass along ten important things to know about winter watering straight from the water efficiency professionals at AMWUA:

  1. You can reduce your “sewer fee,” or part of your monthly water bill, as it is based off of your average water use during the winter months. Lower next year’s sewer fees by cutting back on water this winter.
  2. Overwatering can kill desert-adapted plants, whose roots need the soil to dry out between waterings, so they can absorb nutrients from the soil. Soggy soil prevents plants from pulling in essential elements, such as nitrogen and iron, and can suffocate the roots. This leads to yellowing leaves, poor health and even death.
  3. Sometimes, overwatering some types of shrubs and vines in the early winter months will make them too vulnerable to colder temperatures and susceptible to frost damage.
  4. Cactus plants suffer less frost damage if they have not been watered for several months before cold temperatures set in. They hold their water in their cells.
  5. Overwatering could lead to pools of water in your lawn that won’t evaporate as quickly as in the summer heat. These puddles and winter temps could breed mosquitoes.
  6. There are tools available to learn just how much water your specific plants and landscape need in the winter to thrive and survive.
  7. Rye grass is now established by the winter so no need to water as frequently. You are no longer germinating from seeds.
  8. Discuss these concerns and tips with your landscaper and don’t assume they know all about winter watering.
  9. Test once in a while for leaks in your irrigation system. You don’t want to be overwatering and not even know it.
  10. Trees should be watered deeply but far less in the winter months.

All of these tips can really help to save you water and money. 50-70% of a homeowner’s water usage happens outside. If we can lower our total usage during the winter months, it will really help with water conservation and making sure our region has enough water supplies should drought-like conditions hit us again in the future.
